Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Sub Four' is a miniature variegated cultivar derived from *H.* 'Kifukurin Ubatake' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. Its visual distinction lies in dark green leaves with flat margins, a very shiny upper surface, and slightly shiny underside, forming a compact, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Sub Four' reaches a mature diameter of 7.9 inches (20.1 cm) and height of 5.9 inches (15.0 cm), making it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade typical of hosta-growing zones and pairs well with other miniature perennials such as small ferns or *Heuchera*. Its fast growth rate and small size also make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially in containers, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its small, compact leaves may offer some resilience.
