Overview

Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'String of Pearls' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Goddess of Athena' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Maekawa' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with white margins, which are further marked by irregular streaks of medium green, dark green, light green, greenish yellow, pale yellow, and greenish white, creating a variegated pattern; the leaf undersides bear a glaucous bloom.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'String of Pearls' forms an upright mound reaching approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its cupped, rippled foliage provides textural contrast. The plant pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its compact size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary, as both pests are attracted to hosta foliage.
