Overview
Registered in 1994, *Hosta* 'Straka Gold' is a giant hybrid derived from *H.* 'Gold Regal' (pod parent) and *H. montana* (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its large, dull green leaves with deep gold, smooth margins, forming a substantial semi-upright clump.
In the Garden
'Straka Gold' reaches a mature diameter of 33 inches (83.8 cm) and a height of 22 inches (55.9 cm), with leaves measuring 14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 12 inches (30.5 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, where the gold margins remain most vivid. Given its giant size, this cultivar is best used as a specimen or background plant in woodland borders and shade gardens; it is not suited for containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; regular monitoring and control measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
