Overview
Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Stonewall' is a giant variegated cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Elegans' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, heavily cupped leaves with green margins, a moderately corrugated surface, and a slightly shiny texture on both sides.
In the Garden
This fast-growing cultivar forms a large, mound-like clump reaching approximately 65 inches (165 cm) in diameter and 31 inches (79 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and benefits from protection from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. The substantial foliage makes it an effective specimen or groundcover in woodland gardens, and it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Stonewall' shows typical hosta resistance to deer, it may be susceptible to slug damage on its broad leaves, particularly in damp conditions.
