Overview

Registered in 2004, 'Steven P. Register' is a large variegated hosta of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'Josephine' as the pod parent. The cultivar is distinguished by its nearly round, medium green leaves with flat margins, a slightly shiny surface on both sides, and reddish purple petioles that contrast with the foliage.

In the Garden

This hosta forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large, rounded leaves make it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The reddish purple scapes, which rise 10 to 18 inches (25.4 to 45.7 cm) above the foliage, provide additional interest when flowers appear.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Steven P. Register' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
