Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Sterling Medallion' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Frosted Dimples' and *H.* 'Sea Frolic', with *H.* 'Purple Verticulated Elf' as the pollen parent. Its most distinctive features are the intensely blue-green, nearly round leaves with medium rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a moderately cupped, wavy, and corrugated texture.
In the Garden
'Sterling Medallion' forms a mound-like clump reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is preserved. Its compact, rounded foliage makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as a specimen in small groupings; it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The scapes rise 22 to 26 inches (55.9 to 66.0 cm) above the foliage and are an intense glaucous dark green.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
