Overview

Registered in 1986 by H. Weissenberger, *Hosta* 'Stephen' is a miniature cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Blue Cadet'. It is distinguished by its compact, slow-growing habit and blue-green leaves with prominent blue-green margins, reaching only 1 inch (2.5 cm) in height and 6 inches (15.2 cm) in diameter at maturity.

In the Garden

'Hosta' Stephen is best suited for shaded or partially shaded locations, typical of most hosta-growing zones. Its diminutive size—6 inches (15.2 cm) in spread and 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall—makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a border. It pairs well with other miniature hostas, small ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers, and is well-suited to container cultivation due to its slow growth and compact form.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed.
