Overview
Registered in 2007, this small blue-green hosta resulted from a cross between *H. 'Korean Snow'* and *H. 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd'*. Its most distinctive features are the intensely shiny, metallic medium blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the undersides, combined with moderate cupping and corrugation that give the foliage a textured, almost sculptural appearance.
In the Garden
*Hosta 'Steely Dan'* forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom and metallic sheen are most pronounced. Its small size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
