Overview
Registered in 2000, 'Steel Canopy' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a seedling of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is distinguished by its substantial blue-green leaves, which measure up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in width, with flat margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside. The leaf base is cordate, and the plant forms a dense mound.
In the Garden
'Steel Canopy' reaches a mature diameter of 45 inches (114.3 cm) and a height of 24 inches (61.0 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It is suited to partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and performs best in well-drained, humus-rich soil. The blue-green foliage provides strong contrast when planted near gold or chartreuse-leaved companions, such as *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' or *Hakonechloa macra* 'Aureola'. Its large size makes it appropriate for mid-border or as a specimen in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
