Overview

Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Starry Starry Night' is a small-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Blue June' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Tot Tot' (pollen parent). Its visual distinction lies in the dark green leaf margins that contrast with a lighter center, combined with a slightly shiny surface on both sides and a cordate leaf base.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a fast-growing mound reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its small size and compact habit allow it to fit well in rock gardens or container plantings, paired with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The green scapes, 26 to 28 inches (66.0 to 71.1 cm) tall, bear flowers typical of the genus.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in well-drained soil, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, this cultivar may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
