Overview
Registered in 1973 by M. Eisel, *Hosta* 'Starburst' is a small-sized cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Beatrice'. It is visually distinguished by its medium green leaves with creamy white margins, a compact mounding habit, and a relatively tall scape that rises well above the foliage.
In the Garden
'Starburst' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) and a height of 7 inches (17.8 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers. The tall scapes, reaching up to 18 inches (45.7 cm), provide vertical interest and carry lavender flowers in summer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Starburst' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be necessary in areas where these pests are common.
