Overview
Registered in 1987 by K. Vaughn, this giant hosta originated from a cross between a variegated hybrid (pod parent) and a *H. 'Goliath'* hybrid (pollen parent). 'Standing Ovation' is distinguished by its substantial, dark green leaves with creamy white margins, borne on tall scapes that elevate the flowers well above the foliage.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and height of 34 inches (86.4 cm), 'Standing Ovation' commands significant space in the border or shade garden. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other broad-leaved perennials that complement its bold foliage. The tall scapes, reaching 34 to 40 inches (86.4 to 101.6 cm), make it suitable for mid-border placement where the flowers can be appreciated without overwhelming shorter companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
