Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Standard' registered in 1998, 'Standard Deviation' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: light green leaves edged with narrow, dark green, flat margins approximately 0.3 cm wide. The leaf surface is dull on both sides, and the blade bears ten pairs of veins, with a rounded base and an overall length of 12.7 cm and width of 7.6 cm.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature spread of 61.0 cm (24 in) and a height of 45.7 cm (18 in), 'Standard Deviation' forms a compact, moderate-growing mound suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or spring bulbs. Its small size makes it an appropriate choice for troughs or mixed containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and take protective measures if needed.
