Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, 'Standard Bearer' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage, distinguished by its nearly round, heavily corrugated blue-green leaves with pale blue margins. The foliage displays a dull upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the plant forms a dense, mound-like habit reaching 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Standard Bearer' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration and corrugated texture are most pronounced. At maturity, the plant spreads to a width of approximately 36 to 48 inches, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its substantial leaves provide contrast against finer-textured plants.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally resistant to slugs due to its thick, corrugated foliage, standard slug control measures may still be advisable in moist conditions. Deer may browse the leaves in areas with high deer pressure.
