Overview

Registered in 1995, 'Squash Casserole' is a large hosta cultivar bred from a cross between *H.* 'Hirao Elite' (pod parent) and *H.* 'August Moon' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with medium gold, heavily rippled margins and dull surfaces on both sides.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall and 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a border. The large, cordate-based leaves, each 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide with 12 to 13 vein pairs, provide strong textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
