Overview

Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Spring Grove' is a large, variegated hosta of unknown parentage, distinguished by its substantial mound of ovate leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a moderately corrugated, twisted, and folded texture. The leaves, reaching 9.5 inches long and 7.63 inches wide, exhibit a slightly shiny upper surface and dull underside, with 12 prominent vein pairs and a flat base.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright mound 30 inches high and 48 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size precludes container use for most gardeners.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Spring Grove' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate deterrents should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
