Overview

Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Splendor' is a large, upright cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Galaxy' (pod parent) and *H. hypoleuca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with wide, dark green, slightly rippled margins that are mottled greenish yellow, combined with a very shiny upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

Reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, 'Splendor' is suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas. Its upright habit and large, cordate leaves make it a strong specimen for the middle of a border or as a focal point in a shaded bed, where its contrasting margins and glossy surface are most apparent. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be needed in areas where these pests are prevalent.
