Overview
Registered in 1986 by R. O'Harra, 'Spit Shine' is a medium-sized variegated hosta derived from a hybrid of *Hosta plantaginea*. The cultivar is distinguished by its exceptionally glossy, highly reflective leaf surfaces, a trait emphasized in its name, and by its medium green margins that contrast with a lighter center.
In the Garden
'Spit Shine' forms a substantial clump reaching approximately 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter at maturity. Its leaves are 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide, with 8 vein pairs. The scape rises to 26 inches (66.0 cm). This cultivar performs best in partial to light shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its glossy foliage is most visible. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Spit Shine' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
