Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek (AHS), *Hosta* 'Spinning Wheel' is a giant sport of *Hosta* 'Golden Nugget'. It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, deeply cupped and corrugated leaves that feature medium to bright yellow centers with wide blue-green margins, the latter often extending 0.75 to 1.75 inches (1.9–4.4 cm) from the leaf edge.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright to mounding clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 50 inches (127 cm) in diameter at maturity. Its large, textured leaves and bold color contrast make it suitable as a specimen or accent in part-shade to shade borders, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other broad-leaved perennials. Due to its giant size, it is not recommended for container culture.
Care Notes
Plant in evenly moist, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. While typical hosta-growing zones are appropriate, foliage may be susceptible to slug damage, and deer may browse the leaves.
