Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Spinach Patch' is a large, variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between a *Hosta* 'Gold Piece' F2 seedling and a sibling to *Hosta* 'Aztec Treasure'. Its most distinctive features are the deeply corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with dark green margins and a dull upper surface, combined with an unruly, semi-upright to mounded growth habit.
In the Garden
'Spinach Patch' reaches 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, textured leaves provide strong contrast when paired with fine-textured ferns or the smooth foliage of *Heuchera* cultivars. The plant is not suited for container culture due to its substantial size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Spinach Patch' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures may be required in typical hosta-growing zones.
