Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Undulata Albomarginata', 'Spartan Flash' was registered in 1998 and is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with streaked flat margins and a slightly shiny upper surface. The leaves, measuring 6.75 inches (17.1 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, have a cordate base and a glaucous bloom on the underside, with nine pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Spartan Flash' forms an upright clump reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds. Its medium size allows pairing with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials, though it is not recommended for containers due to its eventual spread.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Spartan Flash' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
