Overview

Registered in 2000, 'Spartan Arrow' is a small hosta of unknown parentage. Its distinctive appearance derives from dark green, heavily rippled leaf margins that contrast with a glossy upper surface and slightly shiny underside, the leaves having a tapered base and six to eight vein pairs.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a moderate-growing mound 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with green scapes reaching 12 to 15 inches (30.5 to 38.1 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants may include small ferns, heucheras, or shade-tolerant annuals.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed.
