Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Tanaka, *Hosta* 'Sparkle' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from *H. longipes* as the pod parent, with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its green and white streaked and mottled foliage, combined with maroon-red petioles that provide strong contrast against the leaves.

In the Garden

'Hosta' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rockeries. The variegated leaves pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, or other shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting foliage colors.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents are recommended, as both pests may damage the foliage.
