Overview

Registered in 1999, 'Spacious Skies' is a giant hosta cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Sagae'. It is distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage with slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, and substantial dimensions that make it one of the larger cultivars in the genus.

In the Garden

'Spacious Skies' forms a mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom remains most pronounced. The large leaves—14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide with 14 to 15 vein pairs—create a bold textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Scapes rise 36 to 38 inches (91.4 to 96.5 cm) above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Spacious Skies' is susceptible to slug damage and may require management in damp conditions; deer also find it palatable.
