Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Richmond Blue' registered in 2015, 'Southern Lights' is a large cultivar distinguished by blue-green leaves with gold margins and unusual blue streaking that extends into the leaf center. The leaves are nearly round with cordate bases, measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long and 8.8 inches (22.4 cm) wide, with 12 to 13 vein pairs; the gold center is bordered by a 3.5 inch (8.9 cm) wide, flat, blue margin, and both surfaces bear a glaucous bloom.

In the Garden

'Southern Lights' reaches 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 29 inches (73.7 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The blue-gold foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
