Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Song Sung Blues' is a giant cultivar bred from the pod parent *H. 'Dorothy Benedict'* and pollen parent *H. 'Maekawa'*. It is visually distinctive for its dark blue-green leaves with gold margins that exhibit unstable streaks of varying yellow shades, combined with a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 34 inches (86.4 cm) and height of 22 inches (55.9 cm), with upright, slow growth. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom and leaf color are best preserved. Its substantial leaves and large size make it suitable as a specimen or accent plant in shaded borders, paired with ferns or woodland perennials; it is not recommended for containers due to its giant stature.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaf substance provides moderate slug and deer resistance, though monitoring is advisable in high-pressure areas.
