Overview

Registered in 1991 by R. Savory, this giant blue-green cultivar was produced from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Honeybells'. 'Sombrero' is distinguished by its large, heavily textured leaves with blue-green margins and a prominent glaucous bloom on the upper surface.

In the Garden

'Sombrero' forms a substantial clump reaching 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. Its large leaves, measuring 14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide with 12 vein pairs, provide strong textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The plant performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
