Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Solid Gold' is a large, mound-forming cultivar notable for its bright gold leaves with well-defined veins and blue-green margins. The parentage includes *H. kikutii* var. *yakusimensis* as the pod parent, with an unknown pollen parent.
In the Garden
'Solid Gold' reaches a mature size of 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, forming a moderate-growing, dense mound. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 6.75 inches (17.1 cm) wide, featuring 12 vein pairs and golden yellow, slightly rippled margins that hold their color well. The leaf surface is slightly shiny on top with a glaucous bloom underneath, and the margins are lightly wavy. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Solid Gold' is susceptible to slug damage, particularly on the tender gold leaf margins, and may require protection from deer in areas where browsing is common.
