Overview
Registered in 1981 by an unknown breeder, 'Solar Flare' is a giant hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with wide, golden-yellow margins that develop a slightly rippled texture. The broadly ovate, corrugated foliage reaches 14 inches (35.6 cm) in length and 10.4 inches (26.4 cm) in width, with 17 to 20 vein pairs and a moderate glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 120 inches (304.8 cm) and height of 40 inches (101.6 cm), 'Solar Flare' requires substantial space and performs best in partial shade to dappled light, where its gold margins hold color without scorching. The substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or background element in woodland gardens, paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. It is not recommended for container cultivation due to its giant stature.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad leaves are susceptible to both pests.
