Overview

Registered in 2010 by P. & J. Ruh, this giant blue-green hosta is distinguished by its exceptionally large, heavily textured leaves that are cupped, twisted, folded, and corrugated, forming an upright mound. 'So Big' reaches a mature diameter of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and a height of 25 inches (63.5 cm), with ovate leaves measuring 11.75 inches (29.8 cm) long and 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide, each bearing 16 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'So Big' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its color and the leaf corrugation is most pronounced. The plant's substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or as a backdrop in larger shade borders, where it can be paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its mound-like growth habit and moderate growth rate allow it to fill space gradually without becoming invasive.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'So Big' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in typical hosta-growing zones.
