Overview
Registered in 2002, 'Smooth Sailing' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta* 'Fascination' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Daybreak' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with gold margins, which exhibit an unstable variegation pattern of dark green streaks extending from the margin toward the leaf center, combined with a slightly shiny upper surface and glaucous bloom underneath.
In the Garden
'Smooth Sailing' reaches a mature diameter of 35 inches (88.9 cm) and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with an upright, moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its large, luminous leaves provide strong textural contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured groundcovers. Due to its substantial size, it is not well suited for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
