Overview
Registered in 2012 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Smooth Operator' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by its exceptionally large, nearly round leaves with medium green margins and a flat, smooth surface. The foliage reaches 18 inches in length and 11 inches in width, with 16 pairs of veins, and produces good white flowers on green scapes up to 38 inches tall.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 34 inches high and 60 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate that suits it as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its large, dull-surfaced leaves contrast well with finer-textured ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Astilbe*. Its giant size makes it unsuitable for containers but ideal for filling large gaps in the landscape.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
