Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Smokey Mountains' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from an open-pollinated seedling of *H.* 'King of Spades'. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, which are moderately cupped, lightly wavy, ruffled, and moderately corrugated, creating a texture that evokes mountain fog.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its small size and compact habit make it suitable for container cultivation, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
