Overview

Registered in 2013 as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Lucy Vitols', 'Smiling Susan' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its intensely corrugated, nearly round blue-green leaves that develop yellow tones in autumn. The foliage is moderately cupped with a glaucous bloom on the underside and slightly shiny upper surface, borne in a compact, mound-like habit.

In the Garden

'Smiling Susan' reaches 13 inches (33 cm) in height and 24 inches (61 cm) in diameter, forming a dense, symmetrical mound suitable for partial to full shade positions in typical hosta-growing zones. Its moderate growth rate and medium stature make it appropriate for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rockeries; the corrugated texture provides visual interest even when not in flower. The green scapes rise 18 to 19 inches (46 to 48 cm) above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during active growth, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Standard hosta pest precautions apply, as foliage may be susceptible to slug and deer damage.
