Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Slim and Trim' is a miniature cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Purple Verticulated Elf' (pod parent; pollen parent unknown). It is distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, which are lightly cupped, twisted, and wavy, forming a compact mound.
In the Garden
'Slim and Trim' is suitable for partial to full shade, typical of most hostas. At maturity, it forms a mound approximately 24 inches (61 cm) tall and 54 inches (137 cm) wide, with a fast growth rate. Its small, textured leaves make it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border, where it pairs well with fine-textured ferns or small sedges. Its miniature size also suits container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not absolute, the glaucous leaf surface may offer some deterrence; monitor for damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
