Overview
Registered in 2005, 'Sky Blue Waters' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, notable for its nearly round, heavily corrugated blue-green leaves with wide, pale yellow margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The leaf blades reach 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) in length and 9.75 inches (24.8 cm) in width, with 15 to 16 vein pairs, and the marginal variegation ranges from 0.5 to 2 inches (1.3 to 5.1 cm) wide.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, moderately spreading clump reaching 33 inches (83.8 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf color and yellow margins remain most stable. The substantial leaf substance and glaucous undersides make it a strong textural companion for ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials; its large size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain soil moisture, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves provide moderate slug and deer resistance, though monitoring may still be necessary in high-pressure areas.
