Overview
Registered in 2016, this giant cultivar results from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' and *Hosta montana* 'Aureomarginata'. 'Sir Cocky' is visually distinctive for its upright, fast-growing habit and large, broadly ovate blue-green leaves with a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, dark green flat margins, and a cordate base.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 33 inches (83.8 cm) and height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), 'Sir Cocky' commands space in the mid-border or as a specimen plant. Its upright, swaggering leaf posture makes it suitable for partially shaded sites, though it tolerates more sun than many blue-leaved hostas. Pair with fine-textured ferns or dark-leaved heucheras for contrast; its large size precludes container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge. The thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate slug resistance, but standard slug controls are advisable in damp conditions. Deer may browse young foliage.
