Overview
Registered in 2003 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Silverdale' is a small, mound-forming cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green, ovate leaves with a very shiny upper surface, slightly rippled margins, and a low, compact habit.
In the Garden
'Silverdale' forms a dense, slow-growing mound 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) tall and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials. Its compact size also makes it a good candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, good substance of the leaves provides moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures may still be beneficial in damp conditions.
