Overview
Registered in 1987 by Kuk's Forest Nursery, this small sport of an unnamed parent produces a compact mound of medium green foliage edged with narrow, chartreuse, ruffled margins. The glossy, lanceolate leaves measure 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long by 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) wide, with three vein pairs and a 0.25-inch (0.6 cm) wide marginal band.
In the Garden
Reaching 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter at maturity, 'Silverado' is suited for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade with consistent moisture, and its small stature makes it an excellent candidate for container culture. Pair with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or tiarella for contrast.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally less appealing to deer and slugs than larger-leaved cultivars, standard protective measures may be warranted in high-pressure areas.
