Overview

Registered in 1988 by Walters Gardens, Inc., 'Silver Tiara' is a small sport distinguished by its green leaves with white margins. The foliage measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with 5 to 7 vein pairs and white-green margins that create a crisp, narrow border.

In the Garden

Mature plants reach 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and spread to 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, making this a compact cultivar suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or small containers. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. The scapes rise 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61.0 cm) above the foliage, bearing lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Silver Tiara' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
