Overview
Registered in 1980 by E. Minks, this large cultivar is a selfed seedling of *Hosta* 'Tokudama', both parents being the same clone. It is visually distinctive for its broad, blue-green leaves with silvery blue margins, a color pattern that sets it apart from the solid-colored 'Tokudama'.
In the Garden
'Silver Rim' reaches a mature diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with individual leaves up to 13 inches (33.0 cm) long and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mass plantings, but it is not recommended for containers due to its spread.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
