Overview
Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Silver Moon' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Maekawa' and *H.* 'Blue Moon'. Its most distinctive feature is the powdery, glaucous bloom that coats both the upper and lower surfaces of its blue-green leaves, giving the foliage a muted, silvery appearance that persists through the growing season.
In the Garden
'Silver Moon' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its broad, cupped leaves with cordate bases create a substantial ground-cover effect. The glaucous blue-green foliage pairs well with golden or chartreuse-leaved companions, such as *H.* 'Sum and Substance' or *Carex* species, and the 13 to 18 inch (33.0 to 45.7 cm) scapes bearing pale flowers add vertical interest in mid-summer.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, 'Silver Moon' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
