Overview
Registered in 1987 by C. Owens as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Silver Giant' produces substantial, broadly ovate leaves with a distinctive silvery blue-gray cast and lightly ruffled margins. The leaf blade reaches 14 inches (35.6 cm) in length and 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) in width, supported by 16 vein pairs, and the plant forms a clump 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall.
In the Garden
This giant hosta performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its silvery sheen. At maturity, the clump spreads nearly 4 feet across, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in woodland borders and shade gardens. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, textured leaves.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; regular monitoring and appropriate control measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent. The scape height is recorded as 24 inches (61.0 cm), though some sources list it as zero, suggesting variability in flower stalk development.
