Overview
Registered in 1982 by K. Vaughn, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Vaughn SG-3' (seed parent) and *Hosta* 'Golden Waffles' (pollen parent). 'Shocking Chartreuse' is visually distinctive for its green leaves with gold margins and chartreuse undulations along the leaf edges, combined with a slightly shiny upper surface.
In the Garden
Mature plants reach approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and spread to 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter. The leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with ten pairs of veins. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and heucheras. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rock gardens, though it is not typically recommended for container culture due to its mature dimensions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
