Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek (American Hosta Society), this large cultivar resulted from a cross between a *Hosta* 'William Lachman' F2 seedling (pod parent) and *Hosta pycnophylla* (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its broad, ovate blue-green leaves with a yellow to creamy white margin that matures to a slightly rippled edge, and by its medium to dark green scapes dotted with red.

In the Garden

'H Shirley Vaughn' forms a substantial mound, reaching 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, which require protection from strong afternoon sun to maintain leaf color. Its large size and bold foliage make it suitable as a specimen or as part of a mixed shade border; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad leaves can be susceptible to damage.
