Overview
Registered in 1998 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Shirley' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage. Its distinctive foliage features golden yellow leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, creating a strong contrast between the bright center and darker border.
In the Garden
'Shirley' forms an upright, slow-growing clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas with gold-centered leaves, as excessive sun may scorch the lighter tissue. The 7-inch (17.8 cm) long, 4.5-inch (11.4 cm) wide leaves have a cordate base and 7 to 9 vein pairs, with dull upper surfaces and slightly shiny undersides. This cultivar works well in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in medium-sized containers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Shirley' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
