Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Shining Image' is a large blue-green hosta distinguished by its glossy leaf surfaces and contrasting green margins. The broadly ovate leaves, with cordate bases and ten vein pairs, exhibit a shiny adaxial surface and a thin glaucous bloom on the underside, giving the foliage a two-tone appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a semi-upright to mounded clump reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 50 inches (127 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or mid-border accent in partial to full shade. Its substantial leaf size and glossy texture pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Like most large hostas, it benefits from ample space to achieve its mature spread.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Shining Image' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones; monitor foliage regularly and employ control measures as needed.
