Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Shenanigans' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with white margins that are streaked with yellow and white. The parentage is unknown, but the plant is notable for producing viable seed despite its variegated foliage.
In the Garden
'Shenanigans' forms a substantial mound 20 inches (50.8 cm) tall and 49 inches (124.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 9.375 inches (23.8 cm) long by 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide, have cordate bases, lightly wavy margins, and light corrugation; the upper and lower surfaces are slightly shiny. The leaf margins are slightly rippled and streaked with yellow and white, and each leaf bears 10 to 12 pairs of veins. Scapes rise 18 to 22 inches (45.7 to 55.9 cm) high and are green with streaking. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended.
