Overview

Registered in 1983 by P. Aden, 'Shalimar' is a medium-sized hosta resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Fragrant Bouquet' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Fragrant Candelabra' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with creamy white margins, slight undulations along the leaf edges, and five pairs of veins per leaf.

In the Garden

'Shalimar' reaches a mature height of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and spreads to 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in partial to full shade. Its medium size and variegated foliage pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, or other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its white-edged leaves. It is not recommended for container cultivation due to its moderate spread.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Shalimar' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
