Overview

Registered in 2003 by G. Johnson and the Russ O'Harra Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Shady Affair' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Invincible' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. Its most distinctive features are the ovate, blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and fragrant flowers borne on upright scapes.

In the Garden

'Shady Affair' reaches a mature height of 14 inches (35.6 cm) and spreads to 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its glaucous bloom. The medium size and substantial leaf substance make it suitable for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant; it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its fragrant blooms appear on scapes 20 to 24 inches (50.8 to 61.0 cm) tall.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
